Vehicle Equity Glossary
Essential terminology for understanding vehicle equity, ownership risk, and VINTrakID concepts.
A
Accident History
A record indicating that a vehicle has been involved in one or more reported accidents. Accident history may influence buyer perception, resale value, trade-in value, and market demand. Digital vehicle history report services have made accident history effectively unavoidable to disclose in most transactions.
Actual Cash Value (ACV)
The market value of a vehicle immediately before a loss or damage event. Insurance claims typically pay ACV minus deductible when a vehicle is totaled.
C
Claim Event
An insurance claim filed for vehicle damage, theft, or other covered loss. Claim events become part of vehicle history and may affect market perception.
D
Depreciation
The decline in a vehicle's value over time due to age, mileage, wear, and market factors. New vehicles typically depreciate fastest in the first few years.
Diminished Value
The reduction in a vehicle's market value after it has been involved in an accident, even when repairs have been completed properly. Buyers, dealerships, and market participants may value a vehicle less because of its accident history, resulting in lower resale, trade-in, or market value. Three recognized types exist: inherent, repair-related, and immediate diminished value.
Diminished Value Claim
A request for compensation related to the reduction in a vehicle's market value following an accident. Diminished value claims are separate from Diminished Value Insurance (DVP) and typically arise after an accident has already occurred. Claim availability, process, and eligibility vary significantly by state and circumstance. Consult qualified insurance or legal professionals for guidance.
Diminished Value Insurance
An insurance product designed to address covered losses in vehicle value resulting from a repairable accident. Commonly referred to as Diminished Value Protection (DVP). Should not be confused with a diminished value claim, which is a post-accident legal or insurance process rather than a coverage product held in advance.
Diminished Value Protection (DVP)
A commonly used term for Diminished Value Insurance. DVP is intended to address covered post-accident vehicle value loss and differs from traditional repair coverage, GAP insurance, or diminished value claims. It is a proactive coverage product held before an accident occurs, not a post-accident legal remedy.
E
Equity Erosion
The gradual reduction of vehicle equity caused by factors such as depreciation, accidents, mileage accumulation, market condition changes, or declining vehicle demand. Equity erosion is a normal part of vehicle ownership, though the rate and severity vary by vehicle type, market conditions, and ownership events.
Equity Health
A broader assessment of your vehicle's equity position including trends, risk factors, and comparison to market benchmarks. VINTrakID monitors equity health over time.
Equity Health Score
VINTrakID's 0-100 metric reflecting your vehicle's equity position relative to current market factors. Higher scores generally indicate stronger equity positions. Informational only—not a guaranteed valuation.
Equity Intelligence
The process of monitoring and evaluating factors that influence vehicle value, ownership economics, vehicle equity, and long-term financial outcomes associated with vehicle ownership. VINTrakID's Vehicle Equity Health™ and Vehicle Risk Score™ are examples of equity intelligence tools.
G
GAP Insurance
GAP Insurance is designed to address the difference between a vehicle's remaining loan balance and an insurance settlement following a covered total-loss event when the settlement is less than the amount owed. Particularly relevant for owners with negative equity or low down payments.
I
Immediate Diminished Value
The difference in a vehicle's market value immediately after an accident occurs and before repairs are completed. It represents the initial reduction in value caused by the accident event itself and is typically the largest diminished value figure, though it is generally not the basis for practical insurance claims.
Inherent Diminished Value
The loss in market value that occurs solely because a vehicle now has an accident history, independent of repair quality. This reduction may exist even when repairs were completed properly and no visible damage remains. Inherent diminished value is effectively permanent — it cannot be repaired away — because the accident history remains in vehicle databases.
L
Loan-to-Value (LTV)
The ratio of your loan balance to your vehicle's value. An LTV above 100% means negative equity. Lower LTV ratios indicate stronger equity positions.
M
Market Value
The estimated price a vehicle could reasonably command in the current marketplace based on factors such as condition, mileage, age, demand, and vehicle history. Also called fair market value or actual cash value.
Mileage Sensitivity
How significantly a vehicle's value responds to accumulated mileage. High-mileage vehicles typically depreciate faster, but sensitivity varies by vehicle type and brand.
N
Negative Equity
When a vehicle's outstanding loan balance exceeds its current market value — sometimes referred to as being 'upside down' on a vehicle loan. Common early in loans due to initial depreciation. Negative equity may increase financial exposure in total loss scenarios.
O
Ownership Economics
The financial factors affecting vehicle ownership, including depreciation, financing costs, maintenance expenses, accident history, insurance costs, and resale value. Understanding ownership economics helps vehicle owners make more informed decisions throughout the ownership lifecycle.
Ownership Intelligence
The collection of insights that help vehicle owners better understand the financial, operational, and market-related aspects of vehicle ownership. Ownership Intelligence draws on equity monitoring, risk assessment, market awareness, and educational resources to support smarter ownership decisions.
P
Positive Equity
Exists when a vehicle's market value exceeds the remaining loan balance. Positive equity may increase flexibility when trading, selling, or refinancing a vehicle. Maintaining positive equity throughout ownership is a common financial goal for vehicle owners.
Pricing Intelligence
VINTrakID's proprietary pricing analysis framework that estimates a vehicle's current market value using valuation modeling, market signals, and confidence analysis. Pricing Intelligence delivers four outputs: Estimated Value, Confidence Score, Market Signal, and Recommendation Engine. It is designed to help vehicle owners understand where their vehicle stands in today's market. Informational only — not an official appraisal, guarantee of value, or financial advice.
Private Party Value
The estimated price a vehicle might fetch in a private sale between individuals, typically higher than trade-in value but lower than retail asking price.
R
Repair Event
Any significant repair work performed on a vehicle, whether due to accidents, mechanical issues, or maintenance. Documentation of repair events matters for resale.
Repairable Accident
An accident in which the vehicle is repaired and returned to service rather than being declared a total loss. Even after a repairable accident, the vehicle may carry inherent diminished value due to its accident history remaining in vehicle databases.
Resale Risk
Factors that may affect your ability to sell or trade a vehicle at expected value, including market conditions, vehicle condition, accident history, and economic factors.
Resale Value
The amount a vehicle may reasonably be expected to sell for in a future transaction based on market conditions, vehicle condition, mileage, and ownership history. Resale value is influenced by depreciation, accident history, maintenance records, brand reputation, and prevailing market demand.
T
Total Loss
A determination that a vehicle is uneconomical to repair or otherwise meets an insurer's criteria for being considered a total-loss vehicle. In a total-loss scenario, the insurance settlement is typically based on the vehicle's actual cash value (ACV) at the time of loss.
Trade-In Value
The estimated amount a dealership may offer towards the purchase of another vehicle when accepting a customer's existing vehicle as part of the transaction. Typically lower than private party value due to dealer reconditioning costs, margins, and resale risk.
V
Value Impact Event
Any occurrence that may materially affect a vehicle's market value, including accidents, major repairs, recalls, title branding, ownership changes, or significant market shifts. Monitoring value impact events helps owners maintain awareness of their equity position over time.
Vehicle Equity
The difference between a vehicle's current market value and its remaining loan balance. Positive equity exists when the vehicle is worth more than the debt owed, while negative equity exists when the loan balance exceeds the vehicle's value.
Vehicle History Report
A report providing information about a vehicle's ownership history, title records, reported accidents, mileage records, and other significant events that may affect vehicle value or purchasing decisions. Vehicle history reports have made accident disclosure effectively unavoidable in most transactions.
Vehicle Risk Score
VINTrakID's assessment of factors that may affect your vehicle's long-term equity health. Identifies potential concerns to monitor. Informational only—not a prediction.
