The Question
What are Pricing Signals and why do they matter when you are buying a car?
The Short Answer
Pricing Signals are the pieces of information that help explain how a vehicle compares with the current market. They help you understand whether an asking price is in line with what similar vehicles are selling for.
Why It Matters
When you know what information is behind a price estimate, you can use it with more confidence. You are not just looking at a number — you are looking at context.
What Pricing Signals Include
Pricing Signals can include:
- Comparable vehicles currently listed or recently sold
- Mileage — how this vehicle compares with similar ones
- Trim and configuration — features that affect value
- Geography — where the vehicle is being sold
- Listing distribution — how many similar vehicles are available
How to Use Them
You do not need to analyze Pricing Signals yourself. The Fair Price Index™ uses them to show you where the asking price sits relative to the current market. Your job is to review the result and decide what to do next.
What Affects the Result
- Fewer comparable vehicles means less information to work with. The estimate may be less specific.
- More comparable vehicles means more information. The estimate may be more reliable.
- Mileage, trim, and location differences can change how comparable vehicles are to each other.
